Christmas! A festival full of celebrations and fun. When it comes a number of things automatically come in our mind. Santa Clause, Christmas gifts, Christmas songs, Christmas stories, shopping, Christmas tree and many other things. Christmas tree has been a part and parcel of Christmas celebrations. Recall your childhood and think about Christmas festivals you have celebrated before. Who was deputed to bring the tree? Your father or mother? Who took the responsibility of decorating the tree?
The question rises here why we have a tree in our home during Christmas? Why we decorate the tree with stars and all that? There are a number of theories related to Christmas tree. Different persons have different opinion about the tree. If we go to history, written records say that a Christmas tree was decorated in 16th century in European country Latvia. Form Latvia the tradition spread in European countries. Via Germany the tradition reached to USA.
People used to have natural trees in earlier years of Christmas festival. Fir trees were used frequently for this purpose. But things have changed now. Therefore most of the families are using synthetic Christmas tree. According to a survey in 2002 in USA, 32% families used real trees in Christmas but 49% families used fake Christmas trees. Markets are full of China made synthetic trees. China has become the biggest manufacturer of synthetic Christmas trees.

These trees are cheap and it is not needed to take care of those. You don’t need watering. You get it and decorate according to your choice. The material of decoration is also available in market. People use shining balls, stars and trinkets etc. to decorate it. The question appears why we decorate the Christmas tree? There is a famous story about it as most of us know. We decorate the Christmas tree to memorize the trees of Eden’s Garden which were overloaded with apples. Families compete with each other in decoration of Christmas trees and try to have the best decorated tree in their home.
If we go back in history, Franklin Pierce was the first ever President of USA to have a Christmas tree in White House way back in 1856. T. Roosevelt was the man to ban the Christmas tree from White House. He gave environmental reasons for doing that. Edward Johnson, assistant of Thomas Edison, was first person to use electric lights in Christmas tree in 1882. The mass production of lights for Christmas tree begun in 1890.
