The Legend of Santa Claus |
|
Christmas is one of the happiest festivals of the world. It symbolizes hope and justice to all the people of the world as it is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. The festival of Christmas can never be complete without the amiable, burly yet cheerful image of a Santa Claus. The myth that Santa Claus gives gifts and presents to good children is age old belief. The children look forward to receive their gifts from their beloved Santa Claus. All this attention makes a person wonder on the origin of this loving figure who has remained inseparable from both children and also Christmas.
The name ‘Santa Claus’ is derived from two words ‘Santa’ meaning saint and ‘Claus’ means Nicholas. The origin of Santa Claus revolves around a man named Nicholas. Nicholas lived in the town of Patara, a town that was in the east. One of his deeds has been woven into a legend that is famous all over the world. In Patara, there lived a lord with his three daughters. They were so poor that once they almost had to beg food from their neighbors. Nicholas decided to help them as he had a large fortune and also a golden heart to match. He decided that he would help the lord in a secret fashion.

One fine night Nicholas went to the nobleman’s house and threw a bag filled with gold through an open window. This gift helped the father to get his eldest daughter married. Next time Santa Claus showered them another bag filled with gold and the second daughter was married. This increased the curiosity of the father and he was excited to discover about the mysterious caller. The third time when Santa Claus arrived with a bag filled with gold and placed it on the window; the lord recognized him and fell on his knees crying out ‘Oh, Servant of God, why do you conceal yourself’. This highlighted that whenever there is some problem, Santa Claus has always come ahead to solve it and that too without the awareness of others. He always loved to shower things on others and did not wish for any special attention. This being the reason he always did his best at night.
Though, this incident is dated sixteen hundred years ago, we yet keep waiting anxiously for Santa Claus to come secretly and bestow us with Christmas gifts. Earlier it was believed that he came on his birthday that falls in early December. This belief was transformed to Christmas as this was a festive celebrated with grandeur and was considered to be an ideal day for receiving gifts from Santa Claus. This thought has never altered even today and the evidence is the stockings that hang out on Christmas with a opinion that Santa Claus would surely bless them with gifts. |
