Christmas is a festive and has wonderful stories relating to the smallest insect to the most intelligent animal, the man of the universe. One such story is of the Christmas spider. This is a miracle that happened few centuries ago and is associated to the season. The story goes like this that an old lady was busy cleaning the house and household items for the Christmas eve. This day was of great significance as this was the day when the Christ child came and blessed the house. The old lady spared no pains to turn her home sparklingly clean. She banished the spiders from their corners in the ceiling and these spiders that were cosseted in several parts of the house took shelter in the attic.
The old lady was contented with her effort. She started decorating her house with great care. She bought a Christmas tree and festooned it with beautiful ornaments and dazzling and striking decorative pieces. The spiders were anxious to see the tree and also desired to see the Christ child’s visit. Among the spiders, the oldest spider consoled the other spiders by asking them to wait until all others in the family went to bed so that they could steal their way out and catch a glimpse of the Christmas tree decorations. This brought a great relief to the spiders and they gave away their disappointing feeling.

Eventually, it was night and everyone went to retire to their beds and this was the most delightful moments for the spiders as they crept out from their secret place, the attic. They saw the house was beautifully decorated and the Christmas tree was truly awesome. The spiders were thrilled at the sight of the Christmas tree as it convinced them that they could settle on the Christmas tree. They danced on the branches all night, dashed the tree trunk and leaped here and there spinning their webs. They were relieved to accommodate themselves in a new place.
When the Christ child appeared in the morning, he was astonished to find the Christmas tree adorned with spider webs. He blessed the house as spiders were also one of the best God’s creations. But for the old lady, who toiled hard to clean the house the Christ child
Touched the spider webs and transformed them into sparkling gold and silver garlands. This action of the Christ child stirred the old lady and rescued the spiders. According to legends, even today they hung shiny flecks on their Christmas tree as a reminiscence of the spiders. |
