The Devoted Thief

There are many stories that speak about sincere and devoted people who perform dishonest actions. The heart of such people is not evil but it is only the circumstances that force them to commit some wrongdoing. In spite of their dishonest profession, they remained loyal to god and never fail to worship him. In return god helps such people as god does not look for the profession, the status and the material offerings of the devotees except for the offerings of the mind. Here is one such eye opening story of a thief who was a sincere devotee of god.

Once, there was a thief in a city. He used to thieve away from the houses of nobles and other such rich people. He only robbed the rich as he felt that the rich could replace the stolen materials whereas robbery in the house of a poor man would hit him hard. For this reason, he never even thought about robbing a poor person’s house. He was not a dreaded robber but he was a bother for the rich as he would steal something from their houses. He also never stole for his personal needs. He had a family and only stole if there was no food at home or if his children were sick. He was a sincere Christian as he donated a part of his loot to a nearby church.

One day he received a letter from one of his friends. His friend had arranged him a job as the king’s soldier. But the thief’s friend was also poor and so he had to arrange for his transportation. Before robbing, the thief visited the church and promised to give Jesus half of the loot and take the rest for transportation. His prayer was always heard by Jesus and that day Jesus decided to test his devotion.

Jesus put all the inmates of the house and also the dogs to sleep as he would do. But that day after sometime when the thief was inside, Jesus woke up all the inmates. They saw the thief and ran after him. The thief hurried out of the house. The thief escaped from the angry inmates but before reaching his house, be went to the church and placed a half of the loot before the statue of Jesus. Jesus saw all the happenings and blessed him for the rest of his life. This story proves how sincere devotion can protect a person no matter how evil his profession is and if he does no harm to serve his personal purposes.
