The Story of The First Noel |
|
Many people are astonished from where the word Noel came from. Few scholars attest this word Noel to French which meant ‘a cry of joy’ indicating Jesus birth. While many other allege that it has relation to the Medieval Latin word ‘natalis’ which means ‘birth’. This explains why people refer Christmas as a ‘natal day’. Another belief is that a Latin word called ‘novella’ could also be the source of ‘noel’. This meant ‘news’ which also corresponds with the thought that the news of Jesus birth is a cause of roars of joy coupled with Christmas time. However, it is also believed that English had the habit of shortening phrases such as ‘Fare thee well’ became Farewell and ‘God be with you’ became ‘Goodbye’.
The First Noel expressed the birth of Lord Jesus through this poem. It is written in such a pleasant style that no one can remain without being moved. This is about Jesus Christ and the message that the shepherds received from the angels. This is the time when Christ was born. The First Noel is popular since the time it was written and now it is more than 300 years old. This is in fact the oldest carol in English. This carol is well known and is the common carol known widely for its sincerity and simplicity. This carol has traveled through the world of mouth and this gained prominence after it was published in 1833.
This Christmas carol brings out the moments of the birth of Jesus Christ in such a lively manner that you have a feeling of an episode going right in front of you. The poor shepherds with their sheep were trying to sleep on a cold winter’s night and an angel came running to them saying that the king of Israel had been born. The shepherds were delighted and saw a star beyond them shining in the east and it gave immense light to the earth day and night. With the guidance of this light of the star, three men came seeking a king and followed the star wherever the lights took them.
The three wise men reached Bethlehem and took some rest. They reverently bowed on their knee and offered gold and myrrh to the newly born Jesus. They sang praises of lord that made heaven and earth equal. Mankind was bestowed with Jesus presence and there was a definite reason for being sincere and honest. |
